Popular Rwandan musician François Nsengiyumva, 40, is already at the heights of his powers as an artiste, and oh, he’s a delightful entertainer. This much ia apparent from listening to his latest track “Icange” and watching the accompanying music video.
Previously known for the hit track “Mariya Jeanne,” which tells the story of a lady who rejected everyone from the village because she wanted a charming bod from the city only to discover when she got there that no one wanted her, François Nsengiyumva has got in “Icange” another track of wide appeal.
François Nsengiyumva’s fascination with music began when he was a kid. Even then he realized he had to make some strategic investments and sacrifices, including listening to every genre of music out there. He also paid an old man a princely sum (back then) of Rwf200 to teach him to play the Umuduri, a local musical instrument that interested him greatly.
He has since become a master at playing the Umuduri, an instrument by which he is easily recognized today. François Nsengiyumva plays traditional music. He is particularly excited that his music is better appreciated today, unlike years earlier. One of his aims is to promote Rwandan culture using his music.
And he seems to be doing that effectively.
